The San Marino Fire Department
established an Auxiliary Firefighter Program in 1997 to enhance the current operation of
the fire department and to build a pre-qualified recruitment base for full-time active
firefighter positions as they occur.
This apprentice firefighter
program is a combination of traditional cadet and auxiliary firefighter programs similar
to the surrounding cities. The San Marino Fire Department has perfected this program to
fit the needs of the department, the State of California, and the auxiliary firefighter.
Individuals who participate in
the San Marino Fire Department's Auxiliary Program are volunteer members of the fire
department and are engaged in a comprehensive training program to complete their
California Firefighter I Certificate. In the process, the auxiliary will perform normal
firefighting duties at the highest level. Auxiliary firefighters are on the disaster
council roster of the California Office of Emergency Services and are recalled to San
Marino in the event of a disaster. The San Marino Fire Department commonly sponsors our
qualified auxiliaries to local paramedic training programs as well.
The San Marino Fire Department
takes great pride in this auxiliary firefighter program and places a great deal of
importance in it. Nearly 90% of individuals who have participated in this program have
moved on to full time firefighting or paramedic employment.
